We had the honor to have Kinga Rusin around our home and office. The famous Polish journalist has interviewed presidents for goodness sake! I spoke to her about my Polish upbringing and how I got to where I am today. Thank you TNV for having me! I'm so so honored to have been featured.
And for those of you who don't speak Polish, don't worry-the interview has been translated below :)
Over 20 years ago, Marysia left her ballet school in Warsaw and moved to the USA to live closer to her parents. Today, she is a happy wife, mother of 2 and CEO of swimwear company called MARYSIA.
What do a ballerina from Poland and a swimsuit designer have in common?
I was actually was going to become a physical therapist! Then I met my husband Nathaniel, and he said “You don't want to be a physical therapist, you want to do something with fashion!” And this is how it all started.
Marysia went to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. One of her teachers told her to try getting into the industry. That did not take too long.
How did it all happen?
It has a been a long road. Many hours spent behind my desk, taking care of every little detail, re-doing things hundreds of times to get it just right. I got it all from my education at ballet school. Also, I think I had a lot of good luck.
Her company blew up right after Gwyneth Paltrow was photographed wearing one of Marysia’s swimsuits for the first time. Then Kylie Jenner, Lupita Nyong’o, Victoria’s Secret Angels and many other celebrities started to wear her designs as well.
How did you come up with the scalloped designs, do you remember?
I was just designing the newest collection and sketched it. Nothing really special. I did not expect it to grow like it did!
How many stores around the world carry MARYSIA?
Besides our online store, we have over 200.
Marysia is planing to expand her company in the Middle East which has one of the largest fashion markets. Her team is not too big but constantly growing. The only man working there is Marysia’s husband Nathaniel.
Is this a joint venture?
Nathaniel: She started it and I joined her like 18 months later.
Marysia: We have a rule at home that we can not talk about work on the weekends. It doesn’t always work but we are getting better at it.
Marysia, how did you meet your husband?
M: I met him at a surf shop in Delaware, where my parents lived. I wanted to buy a surfboard, he worked there and offered me a lesson.
N: After college I found her again, she was 22 years old. I found out that she was spending her Spring break with mutual friends, and I drove down there and proposed after 3 days.
Marysia’s American Dream came true. She had a lot of good luck but also persistence and determination.
So now, You are sitting here at the beach, looking at the palm trees and your beautiful house, Do you feel like it’s home?
We bought land in Harbour Island, Bahamas so that’s our next destination. At least a summer destination.
What do you think about your life? Does it feel like a dream?
I never even dreamed about earning a million dollars with a little silly idea I had about being a designer. I didn't know there was so many possibilities. It took a lot of hard work and stress but now I’m just trying to enjoy life and not stress about the little problems.
We are wishing you all the best and to see you in Poland!
